The Unseen Gap

When Komal Shah Kapoor arrived in Michigan from Mumbai in her early twenties, she didn't have a built-in network, a mentor waiting to open doors, or a playbook for navigating a career in a new country. Like millions of international students, she had to build her foundation from scratch — one cold email, one coffee chat, and one brave conversation at a time.

Looking back, she traces the arc of her life to a handful of people who generously shared their time and perspective when they had no obligation to do so. A single, candid conversation with a cultural anthropologist completely reshaped how she viewed her own potential at a critical fork in the road.

That advice never left her. It reinforced a core belief that would eventually spark SpeakerPost:

Growing up in Mumbai, Komal had already witnessed the transformative power of real-world exposure. The rare guest lectures and industry workshops she attended as a student did more than teach facts — they expanded her sense of what was possible. She carried that lesson through her undergraduate studies in English Literature at St. Xavier's College and her master's in Social Communication at Sophia College, eventually bringing it across the globe.

Bridging Madison Avenue and the Classroom

At Wayne State University, Komal earned a master's in Organizational Communication and Public Relations and an interdisciplinary Ph.D. bridging communication, marketing, and anthropology. While she deeply respected academic rigor, she held a firm conviction: theory is only as powerful as its connection to practice.

Driven to put theory to work, she moved to New York City to fulfill a dream of working on Madison Avenue. Over the next decade, she built a career leading consumer insights, marketing research, and media strategy while launching entrepreneurial ventures on the side. Like most first-time founders, she learned through trial by fire — experimenting, stumbling, adjusting, and rebuilding. She often notes that many of those early missteps could have been avoided if she'd simply known where to find experienced mentors.

When she later relocated to Los Angeles and returned to academia — teaching at institutions like UCLA Extension, CSU Dominguez Hills, and Pepperdine University — she brought that hard-won industry experience into the classroom.

​

To make learning real for her students, Komal made it a habit to bring in guest speakers, partner with live clients, and design hands-on projects. But as she moved across different campuses, she noticed a recurring friction point: faculty wanted to expose their students to active practitioners, but rigid budgets, tight schedules, and limited personal networks kept standing in the way.

While elite institutions could lean on vast alumni networks, smaller or under-resourced schools were left on the outside looking in.

​

Once Komal saw that gap, she couldn't unsee it.

The Architect Behind the Vision

SpeakerPost was born not from a boardroom pitch deck, but from a relentless drive to fix that disconnect.

​

The initial concept was intentionally simple: build an open bridge where educators could easily discover volunteer guest speakers and subject-matter experts eager to give back.

​

While Komal didn't write software code herself, she knew exactly what problem needed to be solved and how the experience should feel. Driven by the conviction that the platform needed to exist, she immersed herself in user experience design, search strategy, and digital publishing. She mapped out the vision, designed the framework, and hired technical partners to write the code and bring the platform to life.

What happened next surprised even her.

A Grassroots Movement & The Next Chapter

As SpeakerPost grew, the community expanded well beyond university lecture halls. Conference chairs, podcast hosts, journalists, corporate trainers, and non-profit leaders began flocking to the platform for the exact same reason educators had: they were searching for authentic, domain-specific expertise without gatekeepers.

Rather than fighting the shift, Komal embraced it. SpeakerPost naturally evolved into a multi-industry speaker discovery ecosystem — helping experts build clean, searchable profiles while making it effortless for organizers everywhere to discover them.

 

Today, while education remains at her core, Komal has shifted her main focus to scaling SpeakerPost 2.0 — expanding its capabilities, building new tools for speakers, and taking the platform to its next level. Whether she is advising a student, collaborating with a seasoned speaker, or designing new features, her north star hasn't shifted an inch.
